Green Bay (March 30, 2006) – At least 14 ships will be in downtown
Green Bay for the Baylake Bank Tall Ship Festival July 27-31, 2006.
The final four ships have confirmed their participation.
Appledore IV – a topsail schooner with a mission of
fostering environmental stewardship of the Great Lakes ecosystem and to
provide opportunities for learners of all ages through shipboard and
land-based educational experiences.
Windy II – built as a modern interpretation of the last days
of commercial sail, she is true to function while using modern materials
and safety features. Completed in 2001, Windy II has many features not
found on older tall ships like hot water showers and private bunks.
Homeport is Navy Pier in Chicago.
Nina – she is a historically accurate replica of a 15th
century caravel (small, light sailing ship) and Christopher Columbus'
ship. Her mission is to educate the public on the “space shuttle” of the
15th century.
St. Paul – a Russian ship, sailed from Russia, is a replica
that was part of a 1741 Russian expedition covering Alaska and the
Northwest Territory. The captain is Russian and his crew includes only his
wife and their cat!
Fourteen ships are now confirmed for the Baylake Bank Tall Ship Festival,
which reaches the goal set by festival organizers. However, it’s
possible more ships will choose to visit Green Bay during the festival.
The ships, listed largest to smallest (sparred length), are U.S. Brig
Niagara, Barque Picton Castle, Pride of Baltimore II, Highlander Sea,
Windy II, Unicorn, Providence, Friends Good Will, Madeline, Nina,
Appledore IV, Pathfinder, Royaliste and St. Paul.
Green Bay is the first and only city in the state to host a Tall Ships®event
of this size and scope. It is expected to draw 50,000 people from a
five-state region, and an estimated 500-600 volunteers will be needed.
