Green Bay (March 3, 2006) – Three additional Tall Ships® have
confirmed their participation in the Baylake Bank Tall Ship Festival in
downtown Green Bay July 27-31, 2006.
Friends Good Will – a square topsail sloop that serves as a historic
flagship for the preservation of traditional maritime skills. She’s the
replica of a ship that was the subject of a famous quote by Commodore
Oliver Perry at the Battle of Lake Erie. Perry mentioned her in his now
famous dispatch, “We have met the enemy and they are ours.”
Pathfinder – a square-rigged ship designed specifically for youth sail
training on the Great Lakes. Since 1964, more than 15,000 young people
have lived and worked aboard Pathfinder and her sister ship, Playfair.
Madeline – a reconstruction of a mid-19th century schooner, typical of the
trading schooners that once sailed the upper Great Lakes. She’s the State
of Michigan’s official tall ship and has sailed on all five Great Lakes.
Ten ships are now confirmed for the Baylake Bank Tall Ship Festival. In
addition to the above mentioned, the other 7 are Providence, Highlander
Sea, Unicorn, Royaliste, Barque Picton Castle, Pride of Baltimore II
and U.S. Brig Niagara. The final batch of ship announcements are
expected in the coming weeks.
Green Bay is the first and only city in the state to host a Tall Ships®
event of this size and scope. It is expected to draw 50,000 people from a
five-state region, and an estimated 500-600 volunteers will be needed.
